About Us |
|
In May 2009 a dream was realized, Tawana Holland incorporated Sankofa Youth and Family Services, Inc. She has worked in Child Welfare in MD and DC for 19 years and has seen many youth become homeless as soon as they emancipated/exited from the child welfare system. Well, the time is NOW to bring this dream to reality by ending homelessness for these fragile youth! MISSION To utilize the strengths and lessons from the past to build confident, self-sufficient youth ages 18-25 using a strength-based perspective that provides a comprehensive, integrated team approach within their community. VISION To ensure that youth and teen parents who emancipate from the child welfare system in MD and DC become productive and stable members of their community, while teaching the next generation the keys to a self-sufficient life. WHY SANKOFA? Sankofa means “go back and take” (Sanko- go back, fa-take) from the Akan language in Ghana, Africa. It symbolizes one taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge. |
